The North America EdTech 200 is HolonIQ's annual list of the most promising EdTech startups from North America.
Building upon established trends, AI-powered tools are not just gaining traction—they’re becoming embedded into core educational infrastructure, from content delivery and assessment to student support and career pathways. Startups such as Magic School AI and Brisk Teaching secured major funding this year, streamlining educator workflows and building capacity. At the same time, there’s a sharper focus on career-connected learning, with platforms like Skillup and PrakitaAI helping learners gain the valuable skills to navigate education with a direct path to employment. The North American market remains competitive, favoring resilient business models that can weather an uncertain funding environment—reflected in this year’s outcome of a younger-leaning cohort.

From early learning to workforce, career connection drives growth.
In early learning, which makes up 1 in 10 of this year’s cohort, digital content and resources represent the largest cluster, with childcare delivery and marketplaces following. Companies like Upkid, which connects early childhood educators with childcare centers, and Parent Powered, which provides evidence-based family engagement solutions, highlight this year’s focus on early childhood education connecting communities with critical child care resources. K-12, grabbing over one third of the total, remains heavily focused on STEM education, alongside a sustained presence of tutoring providers, which saw a rise post-pandemic and continue to hold market share. Math education is also evolving, with platforms like Magma Math, who raised $40M recently, using interactive technology to improve student engagement in math education. Post secondary education (one fifth of total) is largely concentrated in access solutions, particularly education financing and recruitment, with growing momentum in career-connected learning models such as apprenticeships. Notable solutions in the space are Apprenti, which provides career-focused training and hands-on skills, and School Links, a college and career readiness solution that raised $80M recently.
Workforce Development, at almost one third of the cohort, has the strongest presence in training platforms, mentoring and coaching solutions, and immersive learning technologies. Startups like Eightfold AI, which leverages the tech for talent intelligence, and Uplimit, an AI-powered upskilling platform, are at the forefront of workforce learning and career development. Across all sectors, language learning remains a niche, but a solid focus, with focused companies like Speak, which raised $78M this year and uses voice recognition to provide personalized language instruction, are making strides in this space.
The 2025 EdTech 200 spotlights automation, career pathways, and immersive learning.
Intelligent tutoring, automated assessment, and learning assistants are being adopted across K-12 and higher education, while in workforce learning, data-driven skills assessment and career navigation platforms are gaining momentum. Companies like SchoolLinks are streamlining college and career readiness, helping students navigate their education-to-career pathways. Immersive learning continues to expand across all sectors, particularly in corporate training and career technical education, with startups such as TransfrVR and TAP3D, leveraging virtual reality, simulations, and gamification to enhance learning outcomes. The market for digital mental health and well-being also remains strong, especially in K-12 as school systems seek to support learners holistically. Cartwheel, which provides mental health services for schools, is an example of how EdTech is addressing student wellness at scale.

A diverse range of business models is evident across this year’s cohort.
Direct-to-consumer (D2C) solutions remain a core strategy, particularly in career-focused learning, where upskilling platforms (Leland and Pathrise) that offer career guidance, technical training, and job placement services. In higher education, student financing (Fizz and Clasp), and new delivery models (Campus&Nexford University) lead the direct-to-consumer space, while in K-12, STEAM education, tutoring (BookNook), and social-emotional learning (Legends) continue to drive consumer demand. B2B models are strong across all sectors, with startups such as Element 451 and Abre, supporting institutions in infrastructure, curriculum development, digital content delivery, and learning management. The integration of AI into institutional workflow solutions, including student success platforms and faculty support tools, is an increasingly important trend in B2B offerings. Campus, which helps colleges and universities streamline enrollment and retention, reflects the growing role of AI in higher education infrastructure.
Exhibit 3
North America’s EdTech sector continues to see a mix of established players and newer entrants.
This year’s cohort skews younger than in previous years, with over 60% of selected companies founded in the past six years. While post-pandemic funding conditions have remained difficult for all startups, there has been continued traction in specific segments. Companies that have successfully gained market share tend to focus on critical gaps, such as AI-driven instructional support, STEM and career-connected learning, and personalized student guidance. Additionally, tutoring solutions and other post-COVID interventions continue to see demand for now but could be at risk if growth in B2B funding stalls or if state and federal dollars continue to be at risk.
