Alejandro Caballero

Principal Education Specialist at IFC The World Bank Group

With more than 20 years of relevant work experience, Alejandro Caballero is a Principal Education Specialist at the IFC based in Washington D.C. Alejandro’s investment and operational experience in education spans across Asia, Middle East and North Africa, Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa, focusing on Technology in Education, Online Education, Employability and Business-to-Business and Business-to-Government models. Alejandro has been instrumental in the development of IFC’s value-added services in Higher Education: Vitae (Employability) and D4TEP (Digital Transformation), having led 15 Digital Transformation engagements with Higher Education Institutions globally. Alejandro has also played a critical role in the development of IFC’s Ed Tech practice, having led and/ or been involved in the most relevant investments carried out by IFC to date, including Coursera and Andela, as well as in the preparation IFC’s Ed Tech strategy. He has also led the organization of IFC’s Global Education conference in Hong Kong, Cape Town and Mexico City as well as IFC’s first Corporate Finance Services project in Education advising a US Higher Education provider willing to expand internationally. He also led the preparation of the report Digital Skills in Sub-Saharan Africa, among other publications. Earlier in his career, Alejandro worked with the World Bank, supporting governments in Higher Education, Student Lending and Science, Technology and Innovation policy design in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, and was involved in the preparation of book The Promise of Early Childhood Education in Latin America and the Caribbean. Alejandro is an Advisory Board member at the Institute for the Future of Education (IFE) at Tecnológico de Monterrey and has been Jury Member for the Wise and TEC Prize awards.


Prior to joining the World Bank Group in 2006, Alejandro was a Vice President with Deutsche Bank where he worked in Singapore, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. He also held previous positions with management consulting firms Oliver Wyman and Booz Allen and Hamilton, based in Madrid and working across multiple European countries including Germany, France, UK, Portugal, Italy and Spain and in investment banking with the M&A Advisory team of Goldman Sachs, based in London. He was an advisor to the CEO of Action Aid, a global international development organization. Alejandro holds an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business and a Master’s degree in education from Stanford Graduate School of Education, where he was a La Caixa fellow (Fulbright equivalent).  He also holds Licenciaturas in Law and in Economic Science/ Management from ICADE, Madrid. He is a native Spanish speaker, fluent in English and has working knowledge of French and Portuguese.
