Chief Academic Officer and Provost at Western Governors University
Dr. Courtney Hills McBeth joined Western Governors University as chief academic officer and provost on Jan. 10, 2024. She leads WGU’s schools of Health, Education, Technology, and Business, and more than 80 programs. She is responsible for academic affairs, including academic program offerings, faculty mentors, credential integrity, accreditation and compliance, program development, curriculum and instructional design, and assessments.
With more than two decades experience in higher education, Courtney shares WGU’s commitment to changing lives for the better by connecting students with opportunity through a tech-enabled education.
She previously served as senior vice president and chief program officer at Strada Education Foundation, leading efforts to use philanthropy, impact investments, and research to promote equitable outcomes in postsecondary education.
Courtney began her journey at the University of Utah, where in addition to her academic pursuits she was a captain and All-American soccer player. From there she embarked on a trailblazing career at the University of Utah, scaling global and domestic internship programs, and leading academic programs, executive education, and student services efforts in the Office of the President, the Eccles School of Business, Sorenson Impact Institute, the Office for Global Engagement, and the Hinckley Institute of Politics.
As a special assistant to Utah’s president, Courtney led university-wide strategic planning, presidential initiatives, and innovation efforts, including developing an outcomes-based finance model and leading an entrepreneurship challenge with a coalition of national universities. Courtney has developed and taught in-person, hybrid, and online courses in political science, business, and higher education at the University of Utah and Purdue University.
Courtney holds a doctorate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in higher education management. She earned her master’s degree in education and bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Utah.
