Sarah DeMark

Vice Provost, Workforce Intelligence & Credential Integrity at Western Governors University

Dr. Sarah DeMark is the Vice President of Academic Portfolio and Program Management at Western Governors University, where she has worked since 2014. She strongly advocates for creating value-based credentials that benefit and align individuals and employers to improve social mobility and workforce development. While at WGU, Sarah has also served as the vice president of program development and the vice president of General Education innovation. Sarah is the Executive Director of the Open Skills Network, a 2000-member coalition dedicated to advancing an open skills-based education and hiring ecosystem. She also serves on several Boards and Advisory Councils. Before WGU, Sarah spent more than 15 years at leading IT companies, such as Cisco and VMware, serving in various leadership roles where she oversaw the strategy and execution of the design, development, and deployment of innovative, large-scale assessment and certification portfolios. Sarah earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Arizona State University.

While the bachelor’s degree garners skepticism among some prospective students, policymakers, and employers, data continues to show significant lifetime income benefits for degree holders. However, due to the realities of rising prices, high opportunity cost, and other factors, we can’t ignore the skepticism and must lean into the changing nature of learner populations, needed skills development, and accessibility that reaches more individuals who have not been served well by the incumbent system.
