The North America EdTech 200 is HolonIQ's annual list of the most promising EdTech startups from North America.

The return to in-person learning, particularly in K12, marks a shift back to direct-to-consumer models for EdTech, however the use of technology in educational settings continues its long term integration. Workforce EdTech solutions dominate as demand for upskilling and reskilling, particularly in technology disciplines, accelerates, while in higher education, there is greater acceptance of hybrid and online learning with institutions seeking to digitize along the student lifecycle and build or partner for new educational products that service existing and new markets.

The North America EdTech 200 is focused on identifying young, fast growing and innovative learning, teaching and up-skilling startups in Canada and the United States. Powered by data and insights from our Impact Intelligence Platform together with qualitative assessments by HolonIQ’s Intelligence Unit, and local market experts in each region, organizations are evaluated and scored based on our eligibility and assessment criteria.

This year’s list sees a greater focus on the learner experience, including engagement, communication & retention.

As in previous years, startups operating in the workforce sector make up approximately half of this years, list, with Pre-K12 and higher education a quarter each. Systems and solutions to support institutions, from student financial aid systems, to college admissions guidance and learning environments make up the majority of this group with more focus on learners’ experience, retention and engagement (Engageli, Seesaw, Stellic) communication tools (Ivy.ai, Possip), skills assessment and job placement (CodeSignal, Workera, Yardstick). As COVID up-ended assumptions about the form of education delivery, we are seeing the continued evolution of new delivery models including new forms of partnerships and joint arrangements, particularly in the MOOC, OPM and Bootcamp categories.

Direct-to-Consumer business models swing back to dominate the 2022 list

Many of the direct-to-consumer start-ups in this year’s list operate in the workforce sector, offering upskilling solutions (Fluent Forever, GetSetUp, OnlineMedEd, Section4) and platforms for course creation (Disco), with the K12 D2C companies range from peer study notes platforms (Fiveable) to tutoring solutions (Learnfully, Tutored by Teachers).

B2B models support institutions for educational outcomes, access, or administration with learning and assessment support (Formative, Newsela, Paper) or administration and security solutions (GoGuardian, Incident IQ, Kaleidoscope).

Over half of the 2022 North America EdTech 200 list are over seven years old, reflecting the longer time it takes to establish scale in the sector. While it was tough to establish and grow a new EdTech during COVID, we do see some startups in this year’s list that are under 3 years old, with Learning Environments and Communication platforms (Clayful, Class Technologies, InSpace), digital content creation solutions (Castofly), and social emotional learning tools (Tilli, Moozoom, Robin) responding to the increased demand.
