Tutoring and Test Prep solutions remain strong, along with Management Systems, Language Learning and STEAM.

Almost 40% of this year’s list are operating in the K12 sector with Language Learning remaining strong (Edupia, LingoAce) along with STEM, particularly maths and science with teams like Doyobi, Geniebook, Ottodot and Strive Math

As institutions and organisations in all sectors seek to digitise their education and training offering, Learning Environments such as Edmicro, Cognalearn, ACKTEC and Quintal offer solutions that increasingly blend the content and environment for learning. In Workforce solutions, models such as bootcamps (Binar, Coderschool, MindX), micro-learning (ArcLab, Gnowbe) and online education (Conicle, Emeritus, Nas Academy) dominate the list. Soft skills measurement and analytics platform, Skilio, is an example of the increased importance of  ‘non technical skills in the workplace.

Exhibit 3

Direct-to-Consumer, representing two-thirds of this year’s cohort, remains steady.

Direct-to-consumer startups in this year’s list operate across K12, Higher Education and Workforce sectors, including language learning, upskilling, tutoring and test-prep along with solutions for students to find study choices, such as Edukasyon and goKampus.

The SEA ecosystem is maturing with 30% of the list founded 7-9 years ago with a decline of new startups compared with previous years.

This year’s list is a slightly older cohort with 44% in the growth stage of 4-6 years old. There are less startups founded in the last 3 years than in previous lists, perhaps indicative of the challenge of launching and growing startups through COVID. Of those which were founded in the last 3 years, most are D2C models

Exhibit 5

As a hub for the region, it’s no surprise to see half of this year’s list based out of Singapore. Indonesia is also an EdTech market on the rise, taking a quarter of the cohort, Vietnam 14% and Thailand 6%.

Singapore has traditionally been a base for EdTech startups with half the list from this year and last headquartered in the city state. However, the Indonesian ecosystem continues to grow and with a favourable policy and funding environment, sees growth with large players such as Ruangguru and Cakap, along with newer startups such as CoLearn, GoKampus and Pintek. Vietnam is also a market on the move with mature teams such as ELSA and CoderSchool, along with new startups like Azota, a platform to support student assessment. Thailand also sees a few teams making the list in Globish, SkillLane and Conicle.
