The Australia & New Zealand EdTech 50 is HolonIQ's annual list of the most promising EdTech startups from the region.

The Australia & New Zealand EdTech 50 is focused on identifying fast growing and innovative learning, teaching and up-skilling startups from Australia & New Zealand. Powered by data and insights from the HolonIQ Impact Intelligence Platform together with qualitative assessments by HolonIQ’s Intelligence Unit, and local market experts in each region, organizations are evaluated and scored based on our eligibility and assessment criteria.

This year’s list is an aging cohort, as earlier stage startups struggle to get off the ground and growth companies stall with little funding. EdTech business models remain around the 50/50 market with a significant lift in workforce EdTech solutions this year, but a shrinking group of startups in the management systems space as incumbents keep share.

The 2024 cohort includes a larger group of solutions supporting workforce training including solutions for corporates (Go1, Guroo Producer, How Too), Mentoring and Coaching (GetMee, Peeplcoach, TEX.inc) and continues the focus on learning about and with technology (Secure Code Warrior, Saasguru) and training for for deskless workers (frntlne, Hindsite, Typsy).

However, the management systems group shrunk compared with last year as incumbents and mature startups dominate this part of the market. Startups supporting the administration and management of pre-schools, schools and extra curriculur include OWNA, Schoolbytes and Clipboard.

STEAM remains a solid category, with solutions such as Edtripper, a SAAS platform for schools to discover, manage and book educational activities, Hackersjack, which provides cyber security knowledge for K12, Kai's Education enabling AR/VR coding robots in K-12 and Pico, a platform to make learning coding simpler.

Mature EdTechs dominate this years list as new startups find it hard to get a foothold and growth stage companies starved of funding.

The number of newer startups is shrinking as early stage companies find it hard to get a foothold. Of the few in the list which are under 3 years old, including Teachflows, an AI assistant for teachers, and Mist, an app for international students. The last three years has seen a very tight funding environment globally for startups, making it difficult for earlier stage startups to secure funding to reach scale.  30% of this year's list are between 4-6 years old (compared with 25% last year) and, of those startups between 7-10 years, two thirds are operating B2B models.
