The Europe EdTech 200 is HolonIQ's annual list of the most promising EdTech startups from the region.

The 2024 Europe list sees a decline in early stage ventures under 3 years old, perhaps due to continued tight funding environments. The UK regains share with 38% of startups, however other big markets such as France and Spain have less representation than last year, with the Netherlands growing and Italy remaining steady. Overall we see continuing diversity in country representation from Europe, signaling continued investment in, and acceptance of technology in education across European nations. Growth in EdTech for workforce and skills takes this segment to almost one quarter of the list, with other categories remaining relatively steady compared with previous years.

The Europe EdTech 200 is focused on identifying young, fast growing and innovative learning, teaching and up-skilling startups across Europe*. Powered by data and insights from our Impact Intelligence Platform together with qualitative assessments by HolonIQ’s Intelligence Unit, and local market experts, organizations are evaluated and scored based on our eligibility and assessment criteria, which excludes EdTech's founded over 10 years ago, or those which have exited (listed, acquired or controlled by another organization). *This list excludes the Nordic-Baltic region which is covered in the annual Nordic-Baltic EdTech 50, the 2023 edition will be published in late August 2024.

Almost one quarter of this year's cohort operate in the workforce and skills segment, with upskilling solutions ranging from cybersecurity training (Cyber Guru, Hack The Box) to solutions training skilled craftsman (Montamo), digital skills training (Revoltrain) and micro-learning (5Mins AI). Mentoring platforms and matching solutions, such as Meander, Rewayz and Guider also feature in this year's cohort.

Management systems supporting institutions and organisations with digital infrastructure for learning represent one in five, mostly learning environments such as learning experience platform HowNow, learning management solutions for schools (WeSchool) or social platforms for  universities (Brian), to cognitive assessment platforms (Cognassist), or hands-on lab experience for engineers (Instruqt),

The incorporation of virtual and simulated environments into learning processes represents 10% of this year’s list, with applications in medication training (Apoqlar, Immersify Education) and soft skills training (wondder, Bodyswaps, VirtualSpeech) popular use cases.

UK grows share but overall, Europe sees increasing geographic diversity of high quality EdTech solutions, particularly in Spain, the Netherlands & Italy

Five years of data shows a steadily diversifying geographic picture in Europe. In 2020, the three big markets of the UK, France and Germany represented just over 80% of the list, whereas by 2024 their share has shrunk to 64%. This steady trend illustrates that other markets are ‘catching up’ in EdTech to their larger peers. Italy, for example, has been steadily growing the quantity and quality of EdTech over the past years with increased funding and government support, and formalized ecosystem support for EdTech companies.  Spain is also a strong market in itself, and also draws from and to other Spanish speaking markets.

B2B models edge up, but direct-to-consumer still strong

Increasingly EdTech solutions are finding institutional and organizational customers who seek solutions to help them manage their education processes and businesses digitally, including everything from finding, training and supporting the teacher workforce (Fobizz, SupplyWell, Zen Educate) to maintaining modern infrastructure for digital learning (Beedeez, Genially, Klaxoon) and upskilling their people (Immersive Labs, Skillup, AG5, Skiller Whale, Uptale. Beyond the Box).

Direct to consumer models still make the majority of solutions with early years EdTech supporting parenting apps (EasyPeasy) to interactive story writing (Plume, Lunii) to tutoring and afterschool learning (GoStudent, UbiMaster, Lifecole), language learning (Instrucko, Lingokids), study notes and homework help (Glean, ZNotes, Knowunity).

Exhibit 5

Early-stage startups lowest since 2021 with tight funding, regulation and concerns about technology in the classroom dampening activity

The number of early stage startups in the Europe EdTech 200 is it’s lowest since 2021 as tight funding, regulation and concerns over technology use in the classroom dampen activity. Of those startups less than three years old in the list three quarters operate in the workforce sector, including mentoring, upskilling, skills testing and vocational education solutions.

At the other end of the spectrum, mature startups in the list concentrate around established segments such as learning environments (Obrizum, Taskbase), language learning (Tandem, Twenix), school management and communication systems (Kinderpedia, Wonde, Classter), and STEAM solutions (Coding Giants, MEL Science)
