Mobile Promise

More people in the world now access the internet via smartphone than any other device. In emerging economies such as Asia and Africa, which are have younger populations and have largely been able to leapfrog fixed infrastructure, smartphone only internet use is much higher at up to two thirds of all internet traffic. (p.s. by 2030 it is estimated that Asia and Africa will represent 79% of the world’s population).

Following worldwide consumer trends in the use of mobile technology, education is also set to feel the weight of learner preference with respect to what, how, when and where learning occurs. There are currently 2 billion smartphone users around the world (expected to be 3 billion by 2020), and average daily time spent accessing online content from a mobile device is currently at 185 minutes among Millennials, 110 minutes for Generation X and 43 daily minutes for Boomers.

With this reach, diffusion and user acceptance, mobile technology has the opportunity to power access to learning opportunities, social and personalised learning, peer-to-peer delivery models and micro-credentialing like never before. The power is, quite literally, in the hands of the learner.

The G20 Nations (including Spain in lieu of the Euro) make up nearly 2.2 Billion of the worlds 2.5 Billion smartphone users with China, India and the US making up nearly 1.4 Billion of that population.

The Education Category already represents the second and third most popular categories on the Google and Apple app stores respectively, with approximately 500,000 education apps in total (roughly 8% of all apps).

There seems no doubt that mobile is one of the biggest trends globally and also represents a significant opportunity for education at every phase of learning. In order to better understand what’s happening in the Global Education App space, HolonIQ is now indexing education apps from Google and Apple OS, and over the next few months we will share highlights from the global education app trends we are seeing. This week, Part 1 provides a summary of the Top 500 Global Education Apps, overall market size and market share across G20 countries.

It is important to reflect on the different market profile and footprint of Apple vs Android operating systems when evaluating the education app landscape. Across the G20, Android’s operating system drives nearly three quarters of all smartphones, Apple nearly one quarter with other operating systems like Blackberry, Linux, Samsung, Series 40 and Taizen making up the residual which is still over 50 million handsets.

Global Ranking Methodology

Our Top 500 Global Education App Leaderboard is built from the Top 50 Free Apps in the Education Category from each of the Google and Apple app stores in each of the G20 Nations, making up approximately 90% of all smartphone users worldwide. We weight the global leaderboard in each market by the size of the market by smartphone users for each of the respective operating systems. For example, in India, the Top Ranked Android Education App is weighted much higher than the Top Ranked Apple Education App and vice versa for a market like Japan where the Top Ranked Apple Education App is ranked much higher than the Top Ranked Android Education App.

Where an app appears in multiple stores across multiple countries we have defined that as one app, however this approach is not precise given the distribution and branding strategies some app publishers adopt.

Explore the ranking visually through our interactive by filtering by the Top 50 Apps from each respective country noting the rankings will always remain as global rankings filtered by country, i.e. filtering by country will not show the country ranking.Sort by the Global Ranking from left to right, top to bottom, by the name of the app or by the number of G20 countries the app operates in from least countries to most countries, left to right, top to bottom.
